COURSE WORK
Students are required to prepare a report on a knowledge management project, a case study, or a model. The project is aimed at gaining practical learning experience in understanding various issues in knowledge management. Projects are supposed to be generated through points of contact in the professional community (requiring collection and analysis of information about an organization and suggesting steps for initiating km work). Case studies are supposed to produce reports about the status of knowledge management in one of the leading organizations that have taken knowledge management initiatives as pioneering efforts. Students can select one of the consulting firms or IT companies for this purpose. While basic information can be collected from reviews written by experts that are available on KM portals and web sites, filling in the gaps (by contacting the organization through e-mail) may be required. For knowledge management models, a critique of a selected model is expected that may require comparison of different models, in addition to summarizing the salient features of the selected model. This may require background reading beyond the course texts or suggested readings and extensive review of knowledge management resources available on the web.
Whether you select a project, case study, or a model, the report will have to be finished before the 9th week of the semester. A copy of the report should be forwarded to the technicians in the IS Lab by 15 March 2001for placement on the course web site so that other students are able to review the report before presentation. An oral presentation and discussion is due between week 11 and 13. Dates for individual presentation will be posted during week 10.
Active participation is the key to benefit from the presentations. Students are expected to review the projects before the presentation and demonstrate their interest by asking questions, making comments, and offering suggestions and ideas to improve the reports. Marks will be assigned for participation. A written report is required a week after the presentation (changes suggested during the presentation and comments made are expected to be incorporated in the final copy). Three quarters of the course work marks will be based on peer evaluation and one quarter will depend on appropriate submission of the final copy.
